A new farm building is a big investment so think carefully about what you need your new building to do. Will it offer extra space, extra storage, or is it a replacement for an existing building? Will it help improve the farm’s productivity with a good return on investment? Will it improve animal health and welfare? How are you going to use the new building? This will affect the materials used – a barn for the protection of animals isnt going to be the same as hay storage.
Think long term rather than immediate future – will you need more space in a few years time? It would be better to go for a bigger building now than try to extend or even rebuild if you outgrow a smaller design.
These thoughts will be your starting point, before you start to plan what the building looks like.
Where will you site your new building? How will it fit alongside your current buildings, what is the access like? Think about routine maintenance, animal movement, further expansion. Also consider the exposure to the weather, road access, and turning and clearance of farm machinery.
Do you need planning permission? Remember that this takes time to be approved so don’t leave it to the last minute. Talk to your local planning department, read all the available information on this and seek professional advice. Better to have all the facts up front than risk delay later on.
The appearance of your building should be in keeping with all its surroundings, not just your own farm. The roof in particular is large and the most obvious part of the building to be seen from a distance. Think about the colours and consider greens and browns to give it a more natural feel, blending in with its environment.
Remember to plan ahead with a timescale in mind – although this won’t always go exactly to plan! Once you know exactly what you want and need, you can seek decent and accurate quotes and relevant permissions and approvals. Cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean better and custom builds are probably going to be your best option as this way you can stay in control and end up with a building that works for you.
